- Appeals to Oborevwori for support
Mount Horeb Clinic and Dialysis Centre, a private hospital in Warri, Delta State, has successfully completed its first-ever kidney transplant, marking a historic milestone in medical care within the region. The clinic has now appealed to Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for support to expand this life-saving service.

This achievement makes Mount Horeb the first private hospital in Delta State and surrounding regions to carry out a successful kidney transplant, setting a new precedent in private healthcare delivery.
The groundbreaking procedure was performed by a dedicated team of specialists including Dr. Raph Onyemekeihia, Dr. Henry Slater, Dr. Edema Great, Dr. Akporaye Akpomiemie, transplant coordinator Dr. Jimoh Abdulmalik, and Nephrology Nurse Mrs. Vero Ebinum.

Dr. Onyemekeihia explained that the transplant was made possible through a collaboration between the local Warri Kidney Transplant Group and an experienced Indian surgeon, combining global expertise with local commitment.
The team’s primary aim is to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region—to Lagos, Abuja, India, or the UK—for transplants, which often come with enormous financial and logistical burdens. “Now, the solution is right here with us,” Dr. Onyemekeihia noted.
To prepare, the team studied kidney transplant practices in India, Egypt, and several Nigerian hospitals including FMC Umuahia, St. Nicholas Hospital Lagos, and Zenith and St. Caroline Hospitals in Abuja. Since 2018, they have been equipping the facility with the necessary infrastructure.
Mount Horeb Clinic now features a fully equipped four-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with life support systems and a twin-theatre setup—one for kidney harvesting and the other for immediate transplantation—allowing for seamless procedures.
The transplant was successfully performed on September 6, 2025, on a 31-year-old patient who had been battling chronic renal disease. The donor was a perfect match, and the surgery was completed without complications. The patient’s body accepted the new kidney successfully.
This successful procedure is seen as a major breakthrough for organ transplantation in private healthcare across Delta State and the South-South region. It brings new hope to kidney failure patients who previously had limited and costly options.
Dr. Onyemekeihia emphasized that the success aligns with Governor Oborevwori’s MORE AGENDA, which prioritizes improved healthcare access for the people of Delta State. The transplant directly supports that vision by making advanced care available locally.
The clinic is optimistic that this milestone will transform kidney care in Warri and beyond, reducing mortality and financial stress for patients. Mount Horeb is now poised to become a leading transplant center in the region.
With this success, the management of Mount Horeb Clinic is calling on the Delta State Government, well-meaning individuals, and healthcare stakeholders to partner with and support the center in expanding its services to save more lives.
