In a landmark event celebrating 15 years of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was bestowed the Nigerian Content Lifetime Achievement Award. The ceremony, held at the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, marked the inaugural Champions of Nigerian Content Awards, organised in partnership with SweetCrude Reports.
Jonathan, who signed the NOGICD Bill into law in 2010, was recognised for his historic and transformative support in institutionalising Nigerian Content in the oil and gas sector. This accolade coincided with his first official visit to the NCDMB Tower, where he reflected on the progress made since the Act’s passage: “Local content development is not just policy—it is a tool for national development. I am proud of how far the oil and gas sector has come since we laid the foundation 15 years ago”.
The event also celebrated other key figures and companies advancing Nigerian Content. Engr. Tony Attah, Managing Director of Renaissance Africa Energy and former NLNG boss, received the Nigerian Content Icon of the Year Award for his transformative leadership and unwavering dedication to local content development. Attah dedicated his award to all oil workers, emphasising Renaissance’s vision to lead Africa’s oil and gas industry with Nigeria at the forefront.
Other notable winners included:
Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), honoured as Midstream Operator of the Year for its innovation and commitment to local content.
Dangote Refinery & Petrochemical Company, awarded Downstream Operator of the Year for setting new standards in refining and value addition.
Aradel Holdings Plc, recognised as Independent Upstream Operator of the Year for sustainable local content practices.
THISDAY Newspaper, acclaimed Nigerian Content Media Organisation of the Year for impactful industry coverage.
Iroghama Ogbeifun of Starsz Gas, recipient of the Women in Leadership Award for promoting women empowerment in the energy sector.
Prof. Emenike Ejiogu of the University of Nigeria, awarded Innovator of the Year for his contributions to renewable energy research and local innovation.
The awards spanned 12 categories, reflecting the diversity and excellence across the oil and gas value chain, including upstream, midstream, downstream, financial services, media, and academia. The NCDMB’s Executive Secretary, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, highlighted the awards’ role in showcasing innovation and rewarding commitment to Nigerian Content, reinforcing compliance and excellence in the sector.
The selection process was rigorous and transparent, based on metrics such as Nigerian Content Performance Reports, procurement records, Nigerian Content Development Fund remittance, research and development initiatives, and marine vessel utilisation. Winners’ names will be displayed on the NCDMB Tower’s Wall of Fame for two years, with individual honorees granted complimentary access to key NCDMB events for one year.
The event also featured presentations on emerging opportunities in Nigerian Content, including energy transition prospects, local capacity building, and project opportunities within upstream, midstream, and downstream operations.
Speakers such as Mr. Ayogu Ugochukwu of NLNG and Engr. George O. Amara of UTM FLNG highlighted the expanding roles Nigerian vendors can play in decarbonization, carbon markets, and infrastructure development.
The Champions of Nigerian Content Awards not only celebrated past achievements but also set a forward-looking agenda for Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s energy transition, underscoring the critical role of indigenous capacity, strategic partnerships, and innovative funding mechanisms like the Nigerian Content Intervention Fund.
This inaugural event signals a new era of recognition and motivation for stakeholders committed to deepening Nigerian participation and value addition in the oil and gas industry, affirming the NOGICD Act’s enduring impact on national development.
