June 12: Delta APC chieftain,  Michael Johnny backs FG on Local Government Autonomy

  • Tells Supreme Court to grant FG’s demand
  • Urges 36 Governors to show patriotism by supporting LGA Autonomy

The Agadiwei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area, Delta State, High Chief Michael Johnny has thrown his weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led administration’s pursuit for Local Government Autonomy.

The FG, through the Attorney General and Minister of Justice , had dragged the 36 Governors before the Supreme Court, insisting on full Autonomy for third tier of government .

Johnny in a statement on Wednesday in Warri, Delta State, to mark June 12 Democracy day, emphasized on the urgent need to restore democracy at the grassroots to bring good and quality governance close to the common citizens.

According to him, “ We are celebrating June 12 Democracy day, but there is complete absence of democracy and democratic practices in the 774 Local Government Areas. This is lingering and slowing down development and provision of social amenities at the grassroots. With Local Government Autonomy, the communities will begin to feel the impact of the Local Government Council authorities “

The Ijaw leader of All Progressives Congress APC in Delta State, and former Chairman of Egbema Gbaramatu Communities Development Foundation, commended the FG for the timely and bold step taken to secure autonomy for the Local Government.

According to him, the Supreme Court will be doing a great service to the country and majority of Nigerians by granting the demand for local government autonomy brought before the Court by the Federal government.

“ Granting Local Government Autonomy will certainly help in curtailing some of the crimes and insecurity related menace threatening the peace of the country. Local Government Autonomy will empower and enthrone quality leadership at the local government areas to work for the people”

He urged Governors to show more commitment, selflessness and true patriotism by supporting President Tinubu to ensure that Local Government gets autonomy, which will fast track both human,   economic and infrastructural development at the various communities in the local government areas.

“ in all fairness, local government autonomy will strengthen democracy and governance at the grassroots. More importantly, the people will begin to question and hold Chairmen accountable for the usage of  federal allocations and funds coming to the local governments”
