Group Urges Tinubu To Stop Violence In Rivers State

The Niger Delta Congress, NDC, has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stop the escalating violence in Rivers State.

It warned that the violence in Rivers State could engulf the entire Niger Delta, with dire repercussions for Nigeria.

In a statement on Monday, the group said, “The deliberate destruction of local government secretariat in Ikwerre and Eleme, alongside other acts of violence across the state, is a clear manifestation of a grave crisis that demands immediate attention.”

The statement credited to the Spokesman of NDC, Mudiaga Ogboru, noted: “President Bola Tinubu, as the Chief Security Officer of Nigeria, must not remain aloof while the very fabric of our democracy is threatened.”

Mudiaga, asserted inter-alia: “We believe these acts of violence are being perpetrated with the belief that the President will declare a State of Emergency which will see to the removal of the Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Siminalayi Fubara”

“We urge the President to not allow those in close proximity to his office to perfect this sinister plan as the consequences on the nation will be cataclysmic as his silence can be translated as covert support.

“The people of Rivers State deserve better. The nation deserves better. The NDC demands swift action and resolute leadership to prevent further deterioration of this already volatile situation. The time for decisive action is now as failure to respond will not only embolden the perpetrators but also lead Nigeria down a path from which it may not recover”

“The NDC calls on the Rivers State governor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to set up an independent commission of inquiry to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators and beneficiaries of this senseless violence against Rivers state.”
